Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth was raised in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. Her school was closed in two years in order to study acting. She faced many obstacles on her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to do a photo shoot for a publication about crime and drama, however no theater jobs were forthcoming. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. In Boston, she earned a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. She studied drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
